Response 4 (Marx and Engels)

"It follows from all we have been saying up till now that the communal relationship into which the individuals of a class entered, and which was determined by their common interest over against a third party, was always a community to which these individuals belonged only as average individuals, only in so far as they lived within the conditions of existence of their class-a relationship in which they participated not as individuals but as members of a class. "

Does this mean one must sacrifice individuality to act as a member of a class?

I don't really know what this means, but I think I have an idea. This to my coprehension is saying that one decides wich class he or she enters, this is based on their personal interest in the class. This can be used as an example of what we are learning about 'genres', one chooses wich genre is best for there personal interest, and just like classes, genres are divided in categories that separate each individual to another. In this paragraph the class-a relationship that existed in the community is the same as found in the community in wich a genre is designated. I also think that in this paragraph, going to the end explains how individuals participated in its own class without they realizing that they were already members of this class and not acting just as expectators, this can also be used in identifying how each individual where surrounded by their same community, each day is not aware but does the same thing that implicates the genre and doesn't know that this makes one be a member without even knowing it.
